DNSSEC - Nic.pr Press ReleaseTHE .PR IS THE SECOND TLD IN THE WORLD WITH DNSSEC. A MORE SECURE TECHNIQUE FOR NAME RESOLVING ON THE INTERNET On August 1, 2006 as the second ccTLD will begin the transition to DNSSEC. By way of introduction NIC-PR will distribute a signed .pr-zone in the name servers. DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) is a specification of a set of new extensions to the DNS, through the definition of additional DNS Resource Records, that can be used by DNS clients to validate the authenticity of a DNS response, the data integrity of the DNS response and authenticated denial of existence. This protects the Internet from certain attacks, such as DNS cache poisoning and sabotage. The protection mechanisms used on DNSSEC are the use of digital signatures. DNSSEC involves that the user when requesting a name resolving in DNS may decide if the returned answer is from a valid source and that the information has not been altered on its way back (data integrity and authentication). It is not possible to tell when all the name servers on the Internet will be prepared for DNSSEC, but by NIC-pr choice to be an early adopter we will make it easier for name server operators to offer DNSSEC to their customers. Any information regarding NIC-PR DNSSEC initiative will be available at http://dnssec.nic.pr. |
